Sunglasses Case – A free crochet pattern

I go through a pair of sunglasses every couple of years. They get thrown in my purse, in the truck, and everywhere imaginable when we go on vacation. I’ve searched for a case off and on but none of them were tall enough for my sunglasses. Then I thought I could find a crochet case but it’s been really hard, impossible really, to find one to fit my particular pair of sunglasses. You see, I have to have the sunglasses that fit over my eyeglasses and the only ones I like are the ones from Walmart. They’re a bit big but they’re really pretty and get the job done. I’ve made a few of the cases that are floating around the internet but they just aren’t big enough for my sunglasses so I made up my own pattern and I would like to share it with you. I’m really confident when I say that this case will fit almost any pair of glasses or sunglasses.

Stitches used in this pattern (US terms):

  • Ch- chain
  • St(s) – stitch
  • Sl st – slip stitch
  • Hdc – half double crochet
  • Dc – double crochet

Materials:

  • Yarn: Less than a half of a skein of any worsted weight yarn
  • I hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Pattern:

Row 1: Chain 11, hdc in 2nd chain from hook, hdc across (10 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), hdc across; turn (10 sts)

Row 3: Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), hdc in the next 10 stitches. Put 2 hdc along the side. Hdc 10 stitches across the foundation chain and then 2 hdc up the other side. Sl st to the 1st hdc ( 24 sts)

From now on you will be working in the round. Do not turn your work!

Round 4: Ch 2 (counts as a stitch), dc in the same stitch. “skip a stitch, 2 dc in the next stitch”. Repeat from “ to “ around 10 times. Sl st into the top of the ch 2. (12 v-stitches).

Round 5: Ch 2 (counts as a stitch), Hdc in the next stitch and around. Slip stitch into the top of the Ch 2. (24 stitches)

Repeat rounds 4 & 5: five times.

Round 16: Ch 2 (counts as a stitch), Hdc in the next stitch and around, slip stitch into the top of the Ch 2 and then tie off.

For the tie:

Chain 40 and tie off. Make sure you leave enough yarn at each end to attach the tassels. Weave it in and out of round 16 every two stitches.

Tassels:

Wrap it around your fingers fifteen times.

Then take one end of your tie and slip it under one half of the wrapped yarn.

Take a second piece of yarn and tie it really tight about a half inch from the top knot and then cut the bottom part to create the tassel .
