Mug Rugs…. a free crochet pattern

I’m not sure where I’ve been but these mug rugs are absolutely adorable. They’re basically a coaster but bigger. I’ve checked around for a pattern but nothing really caught my attention. I made my own and decided to share it with everyone.

I also decided to learn a new stitch, the herringbone half double crochet. This stitch is so pretty and I will be using this more in the future. I love the knot effect it leaves.

You will need:

An H hook

Cotton yarn (I used I Love This Cotton in Curry)

Tapestry needle

Scissors

Special stitches:

FSC: Foundation Single Crochet. You can find out how to do the stitch here.

HHDC: Herringbone Double Crochet. You can find out how to do the stitch here.

Pattern:

Row 1: FSC 20 or CH 21 and sc into the back hump of the second CH from the hook and in each stitch across. Turn (20)

Row 2: Chain 2 ( counts as a stitch). Make 19 HHDC across. (20)

Row 3: CH 1 (does NOT count as a stitch). SC across. ( 20)

Row 4: Repeat row 2

Row 5: Repeat row 3

Row 6: Repeat row 2

Row 7: Repeat row 3

Row 8: Repeat row 2

Row 9: Repeat row 3

Row 10: Repeat row 2

Row 11: Repeat row 3

Row 12: Repeat row 2

Row 13: Repeat row 3

Tie off. This rectangle is about 4×6 in size. It’s ok if it’s a bit bigger, gauge isn’t important.

Fringe: Cut 24 strips 4 1/2 inches long. Insert hook in the side second row from the back, pull through 2 strands at the midpoint creating a loop. Pull all 4 ends tightly through the loop. Repeat this process every other row.

I hope you enjoy this pattern. I’d love to see what you make. You can find me on FB at MandasCraftyCorner. I am also on IG at Snappamperandhook. If you’d like a custom set, head over to my products page for pricing and contact me.
