Hanging Baskets… A free crochet pattern
I made a few baskets a couple weeks ago and I’ve been sitting on the pattern because I just didn’t like the way they looked. Then the end of the school year was upon us, I went to the dentist, and got a sinus infection. Life hit me hard!!! But, I finally got the time this afternoon to rework the pattern. It was such a beautiful day out that I sat outside for the majority of the afternoon and worked these up within a few hours.
These baskets come in two different sizes: small and large. Here’s what you will need:
- Bernat Maker Home Dec yarn
- I (5.5 mm) hook
- Scissors
- Needle
Abbreviations:
- CH: chain
- SC: single crochet
- DC: double crochet
- DC DEC: double crochet decrease
- SL ST: slip stitch
- ST: stitch
For the small basket!
Start by making a magic circle
Round 1: Ch 1, 12 DC in magic circle, SL ST to first DC (12)
Round 2: CH 1, 2 DC in each st around, SL ST into first DC (24)
Round 3: CH 1, *DC, 2 DC, repeat from * around. SL ST into first DC (36)
Round 4-6: CH 1, SC around, SL ST to the first stitch of previous row (36)
Round 7: CH 1, DC in the first 9 stitches, *DC DEC, 1 DC, repeat from * 5 times, DC into next 9 stitches. DO NOT SL ST!
This is where you’re creating your loop up top! After you are done with Round 7, CH 15 times. SL ST into the first DC.
Round 8: Ch 1, SC into each DC stitch. When you get to the chain, add 15 SC around (not into) the chain. SL ST into the first SC.
Leave a tail about 18 inches long to wrap around the base of the loop and tie off.
Now for the large basket!
Start by making a magic circle
Round 1: CH 1, 12 DC in magic circle, SL ST to the first DC (12)
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 DC in each ST around, SL ST in the first DC (24)
Round 3: Ch 1, *DC, 2 DC, repeat from * around, SL ST into first DC (36)
Round 4: Ch 1, *1 DC in next two st, 2 DC, repeat from * around, SL ST into first DC (48)
Round 5: Ch 1, *DC in next three sts, 2 DC, repeat from * around, SL ST into first DC (60)
Round 6-9: CH 1, SC around, SL ST into first ST from previous round (60)
Round 10: Ch 1, DC in the first 15 stitches, *DC DEC, 1 DC, repeat from * 9 times, DC into next 15 stitches, SL ST into first DC (50)
Round 11: CH 1, DC in first 20 stitches, *DC DEC, 1 DC, repeat from * 3 times, DC in last 18 stitches, DO NOT SL ST (46)
This is where you’re creating your loop up top! After you are done with Round 11, CH 20 times. SL ST into the first DC.
Round 12: Ch 1, SC into each DC stitch. When you get to the chain, add 20 SC around (not into) the chain. SL ST into the first SC (46)
Leave a tail about 18 inches long to wrap around the base of the loop and tie off.

Thanks for the pattern. On the small basket after round 7 I’m thinking the strap directions start after round 7 and not round 5 like it says? I was confused at first but I think that sorts it out. 🙂

What are the final dimensions of the large basket ? Someone is asking me to make this for their two cats and I’m not too sure if it’ll be large enough ! Thank you for your reply !!
MandasCorner
This is definitely not large enough for a cat. The large basket is only 10 inches tall and 5 inches wide with 2 inches in depth.

I found your pattern the easiest to read.

Can you tell me about how much yards you used to make the small one please? I want to dye some macrame cord to make it. Thanks!
