Lion Brand Ferris Wheel yarn review
Can we please talk about this yarn? This yarn is very quickly becoming one of my favorites. I know it’s been out for a while but it just arrived at my local Walmart and for a great price! Most craft stores are selling it for $5 but I was able to grab three of the Cotton Candy skeins for $3.47 each.
Let’s talk about the specifics of this yarn.
- Brand: Lion Brand
- Collection: Ferris Wheel
- Content: 100% Acrylic
- Weight Category: 4
- Weight: 3 oz
- Yards: 270 yds
- Knit gauge: 20 stitches with size 7 needles
- Crochet gauge: 14 stitches with H hook
- Recommended hook size: H
- Care: Machine wash and dry
Now that’s out of the way, here are my thoughts.
When I seen these, the first thing that caught my attention was the color. It’s so gorgeous. The Cotton Candy yarn reminds me of a mermaid. The yarn is variegated and has a tweed look to it. The color change is very subtle so there isn’t any annoying abrupt color changes. The second thing I noticed was how unbelievably soft this yarn was for it being acrylic. This is not your standard thick and stiff acrylic yarn.
It looks great, but how does it work up?
It works up perfectly!
I had no problems using this yarn. The first thing I noticed while working with it is that it’s a thin 4 weight. The yarn thickness fluctuates a bit but not enough to really notice. I did not use the recommended hook size, I used a J hook, so I’m not sure how it works up with a smaller hook.
I didn’t have any problems with the yarn snagging either. At one point, I had to rip out three rows toward the end of the shawl. I was scared it was going to snag since it was fuzzy, but it didn’t. Thank goodness!
As I worked on my shawl I noticed a few things that made me extremely happy with my choice of this yarn. ONE: I did NOT come across any knots with this yarn. I had two knots in my entire project and that was because I used three skeins. Most variegated yarn has knots that mess up the color changes. TWO: The yarn did not split at all while I worked with it. This is a major thing for me because I usually end up frustrated and frog the entire project.
The only downfall!
I could not find the center of this yarn and ended up with a HUGE yarn baby to begin with. Now, I know this is more of a user error than manufacturer error so it’s no big deal. I just thought I’d let you guys know.
Would I use this yarn again? Absolutely! I would even pay $5 for it if I had to. I’m very excited to buy a few of the other colors to try out. I see a hat and gloves in my future.
Now, I know you’re probably wondering about this shawl and where you can find the pattern to make your own. It’s the Such Simple Shawl over on Wilmade.com. She uses Mandala yarn for her shawl. I love her choice of yarn but I wanted something a bit thicker for the harsh winters here.
As always, if you’d like to purchase a shawl from me, send me a msg. You can find me on FB at Manda’s Crafty Corner also.
